To understand what is art you need to understand the definition of art. In the dictionary art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional powert”. Once we have understood the word art we can start thinking about what is art. Leo Tolstoy is a Russian writer. He wrote the book “what is art” in the period 1852-1910.
Leo Tolstoy argued that people looked at art very differently. To show what art is he wrote the book. In chapter five he explains that art is a relationship between man to man, artist to man. The artists is giving us his expressions. He is showing his thoughts and ideas to the person whom he is communicating to. Art is visual communication. A way of communicating to people, ideas, story’s or thoughts. He goes on about that a man, receiving through his sense’s hearing or sight another mans expression of feeling. He explains by saying “one man laughs, and another who hears becomes merry; or a man weeps, and other who hears feels sorrow”. He explains that the feeling that the artist is having at that moment is shown and carry’s on through others. Then Leo Tolstoy starts talking about what good art is and what bad art is. I have shown what the definition of art is and one whom belives what art is. To comper the two source we have understood what is art. Art is a way of communicating to one person or other, to receive information to one and another.
